Title:Leprosy and AIDS: two cases of increasing inflammatory reactions at the start of highly active antiretroviral therapy ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; 2004. 4 p. .
Abstract:Reported here are the cases of two HIV-positive patients with skin lesions suggestive of leprosy, based on clinical and pathological analysis, which worsened during the few weeks following initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy. The lesions improved after a few weeks of multidrug therapy for leprosy. Mycobacterium leprae was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction analysis of blood in case 1 and of a biopsy sample in case 2. Neither Mycobacterium avium complex nucleic acid, which is usually associated with immune restoration syndrome, nor mycobacterial cutaneous manifestations were detected in either case(AU).

Title:Thalidomide for autoimmune disease ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; apr. 1983. 7 p. .
Abstract:The therapeutic efficacy of thalidomide in erythema nodosum leprosum suggests that thalidomide might play a useful therapeutic role in other human immune-complex diseases. Thalidomide has shown anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive actions in several animal models. Current evidence suggests that its rapid activity in ENL may result from suppression of neutrophil chemotaxis and phagocytosis. Scattered anecdotal clinical reports of apparent response to thalidomide in various autoimmune diseases are hardly conclusive, but underline the desirability of appropriate pilot trials of thalidomide in autoimmune diseases, particularly those in which immune complex deposition plays a prominent role. Provided that a contraindication in fertile women is strictly observed, thalidomide therapy appears to be quite safe.(AU).

Title:Cutaneous tissue repair: basic biology considerations. I ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; 1985. 25 p. ilus, tab.
Abstract:Wound repair of the integument is reviewed in the context of new developments in cell biology and biochemistry. Injury of the skin and concomitant blood vessel disruption lead to extravasation of blood constituents, followed by platelet aggregation and blood clotting. These events initiate inflammation and set the stage for repair processes. The macrophage plays a pivotal role in the transition between wound inflammation and repair (granulation tissue formation), since this cell both scavenges tissue debris and releases a plethora of biologically active substances that include growth factors. Although concrete evidence is lacking, growth factors are probably at least partially responsible for the angiogenesis and fibroplasia (granulation tissue) that gradually fill the wound void. If the epidermal barrier is disrupted during injury, reepithelialization begins within 24 hours and proceeds first over the margin of residual dermis and subsequently over granulation tissue. The signals for angiogenesis, fibroplasia, neomatrix formation, and reepithelialization in wound repair are not known, but a number of possibilities are discussed. Matrix remodeling is the last stage of wound repair and gradually increases the scar tensile strength to 70% to 80% of normal skin. (AU).

Title:Histogenic differentiation of polar tuberculoid granuloma and the "benign" or "malignant" behaviour of hanseniasis.
Source:Hansen. Int;14(2):83-86, dez. 1989. ilus, graf.
(AU).
