Resumo: In this presentation an attempt has been made to describe the nine-banded armadillo as an animal model, probably the only one in which lepromatous leprosy similar to that found in humans can be experimentally produced. Some unique features of the physiology of the animal are mentioned. The pathology and the microbiology of leprosy in the armadillo are described in detail. The discovery of lepromatous leprosy in the wild armadillos in the southern parts of United States, the transmission of disease among them through trauma and thorn pricks and the pathogenesis of the disease are presented. The impact of leprosy in the wild animals may have on human leprosy is discussed. (AU). Resumo: Infection of nine-banded armadillos with decreasing doses of armadillo-passaged leprosy bacilli show that most individuals of this species are susceptible and only about 20 percent are resistant regardless of the size of the infecting bacterial dose. It is pointed out that the intraspecies distribution of resistance to leprosy in human beings and in nine-banded armadillos differs because most individuals of the former species are resistant. Attention is drawn to the possibility that the results of anti-leprosy vaccination in armadillos might not apply to vaccination of human beings because the differences in distribution of resistant individuals might also reflect different mechanisms of susceptibility in the two species.(AU). Resumo: The lymphocyte transformation test was applied to compare in vitro lymphocyte responses of tuberculoid (high resistant) and lepromatous (low resistant) leprosy patients to purified Mycobacterium leprae derived from experimentally infected armadillos and crude M. leprae derived from man, as well as to bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and purified protein derivative (PPD). It was found that the purification procedure using enzymic digestion did not affect the immunogenicity of armadillo-derived M. leprae as compared with the crude human-derived preparation, although 2.5-5-fold higher doses of the purified organisms were required to elicitate equivalent lymphocyte responses. The result indicated the suitability of purified armadillo-derived M. leprae as the standard antigen for lymphocytes transformation tests in leprosy. The cross-reactivity studies show a close relationship between PPD and BCG, but not between M. leprae and PPD or BCG.(AU).
