| Abstract: | Thirty five patients with lepromatous leprosy of the Hospital Aimorés, Bauru, S. Paulo, Brazil, with mouth lesions, were studied. The posterior portions of the palate were the area of the mouth mainly involved. Comparative bacterial examination of the nose, mouth and skin were performed before and after specific therapy. The oral lesions were still positive when the skin lesions remained unchanged or regressed slowly. This was interpreted as a uniform response of the host to the drugs. The mucous lesions do not regress, as it is commonly thought, before the skin lesions. A negative examination of the nasal mucosa, therefore, does not afford certainty that the patient is not contagious. This type of examination cannot be used as a guide of therapeutic activity or criterium for hospital discharge. (AU).
