Title:Photoaging: mechanisms and repair Photoaging: mechanisms and repair-v.55
Source:s.l; s.n; 2006. 19 p. ilus, tab, graf.
Abstract:Aging is a complex, multifactorial process resulting in several functional and esthetic changes in the skin. These changes result from intrinsic as well as extrinsic processes, such as ultraviolet radiation. Recent advances in skin biology have increased our understanding of skin homeostasis and the aging process, as well as the mechanisms by which ultraviolet radiation contributes to photoaging and cutaneous disease. These advances in skin biology have led to the development of a diversity of treatments aimed at preventing aging and rejuvenating the skin. The focus of this review is the mechanism of photoaging and the pathophysiology underlying the treatments specifically designed for its prevention and treatment. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants should be familiar with the mechanism of photoaging, the treatments for photoaging, and the data that supports the use of these treatments...(AU).

Title:Significance of immune reactions in leprosy ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; Jun-Jul. 1980. 20 p. .
Abstract:The disease Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The only known natural host for this mycobacterium is the human being. A mycobacterial disease described in wild armadillos in Louisiana as being indistinguishable from leprosy (walsh et al. 1975), is of questionable significance for the epidemiology in humans (Fillice et al. 1977).(AU).

Title:Nerve grafting in leprosy ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; jun. 1975. 10 p. ilus, tab.
Abstract:The most serious disbility from which patients with leprosy suffer is sensory loss since it results in the formation of trophic ulcers, infections, burns and loss of portions of limbs. Impaired motor function can be partially restored by tendon transposition and physiotherapy, but no successful remedy has been devised for the treatment of the sensory disability.(AU).

Title:Effect of rifampin, clofazimine, and B1912 on the viability of Mycobacterium leprae in established mouse footpad infection ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; apr. 1976. 5 p. graf.
Abstract:Continuous dietary administration of rifampin to mice with an established Mycobacterium leprae footpad infection reduced the bacillary solid ratio, with an estimated survival half-life of 5-6 days. In rifampin-treated immunosuppressed animals the survival half-life of solid bacilli, in the absence of host immunity, was 12-13 days. Clofazimine and B1912 produced a significant effect on solid ratio only after a lag period of apparently 100 days. The rate of action was considerably slower than that of rifampin. Intermittent (once monthly) administration of both drugs produced effects similar to those of continuous administration.(AU).

Title:The testis in mice infected with Mycobacterium leprae ..-
Source:s.l; s.n; feb. 1975. 7 p. ilus, tab.
Abstract:Following inoculation either locally or intravenously with Mycobact. leprae of human origin, the histopathology and bacteriology of the testis in experimental mice is described. Normal mice, and mice rendered immunologically deficient by thymectomy and whole-body irradiation, were studied. Attention is drawn to a heavy bacillation of the testis in mice from both groups. Bacilli were found in and beneath the tunica albuginea, but mainly in interstitial cells and in macrophages surrounding the tubules. The percentage of solidly staining bacilli was high, and globi were frequent. The study showed that the testis in mice is particularly favourable for the lodgement and multiplication of Mycobact. laprae following either local or intravenous inoculation. The significance of this in relation to the metabolism of the leprosy bacillus and to the frequent occurrence of testicular damage in the lepromatous male patient is discussed. This work was supported by grants to A. G. M. Weddell and A. C. McDougall from the Medical Research Council and the British Leprosy Relief Association (LEPRA).(AU).
