Abstract: An iron-containing blood pigment was found in the affected organs and tissues of all cases of leprosy that I examined. In the nodular form of the disease this pigment is deposited in strikingly large quantities, while in the maculo-neural and tuberculoid forms the quantity is very small. The cause of the pigment formation may be (a)erythrocyte destruction in the general blood stream, or (b) some process of local character. The generally accepted view that the leprosy bacillus does not excrete toxic substances that may act on the cells of the organisms seems to be against the first of these theories. However, this view is based entirely on clinical data and not on experimental immuno-biological studies. It seems quite possible that products of bacillary activity may be fixed by the lipoid membrane of the erythrocyte and destroy them. In favor of the second theory, that the pigment is of local origin, is my observation that erythrophagocytosis is found with some constancy in the lesions. It is true that in cases of the nodular form phagocytosis is demonstrated with great difficulty, though the pigment is deposited in large quantities. However, in some of the cases in which there were lesser quantities of pigment, that did not interfere with the clearness of the picture, phagocytosis could be observed. At any rate, the question must be regarded as an open one, requiring further study... (AU). Abstract: Mycobacterium leprae separated from armadillo tissues stored at -80 degrees C is similar to that from human sources in its ability to take up 3H-labelled 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA). Several inhibitors were studied which showed complete or partial inhibition of [3H]DOPA uptake. A light and electron microscopic study ..- Source: s.l; s.n; oct. 1970. 17 p. ilus. Abstract: The spleen of the armadillo is invested by a capsule composed predominantly of smooth muscle. Inward extensions from the capsule contribute to an extensive system of trabeculae of the non-vascular type. The white pulp presents series of venous sinsuses. The capillary segment of the penicillar artery is invested by an ellipsoid sheath. The spleen of the armadillo may be included in the class of mammalian spleens characterized as sinusal in nature and possessing ellipsoid sheaths. Electron micrographs of thin sections of the sheathed capillaries demonstrate a high-type of endothelium. A characteristic feature of this endothelium is the presence of a distinct intracytoplasmic fibrous component. The reticular cells comprising the sheath proper exhibit various sized vacuoles and inclusion bodies suggestive of their potentially phagocytic nature. In both light and electron microscopy, venous sinuses lie in close proximity to the paripheral cells of the ellipsoid sheaths. Within the wall of the venous sinuses, patent openings are apparent between the lining cells. If such an arrangement exists in the functional state of the organ, it could provide for an additional means of exposure of both plasma and cellular elements to the adjacent phagocytic cells of the sheath proper.(AU).
